After Hurricane Sandy devastated the Jersey Shore the band announced that this would be a benefit concert. The band focused on the Away from the World material at these shows, which were quite excellent.

The warehouse provided me with the same seat locations on consecutive nights, excellent seats just off the floor on the side. Nice going back to the exact same seats on the second night!

No digital video screens at this show, apparently the regular setup for the large venues would not fit in this arena.

One of my favorite shows, a wonderful performance for this tour closer right before Christmas. A classic Copperpot video is online, which I have watched so many times, especially the #41 and Best of What’s Around sequence, which contains a Jeff Coffin sax solo at the end that can’t be beat.
Following an event at Sandy Hook too horrible to describe in the week before this show, this version of Christmas Song is especially beautiful, and sang so intensely and poignantly by Dave.

NYC West Side [Location]
Great to see Bernie play keyboards again, and especially nice to see him with Kimock in a small place on the Upper West Side. Bernie Williams came out as a guest and played guitar. After the show we bunked into Rich “Goose” Gossage (its kind of hard to miss him), Hall of Fame Yankees star, who one of there in support of Bernie Williams.

This Saturday Night will be remembered for the frigid weather. It was unseasonably cold in upstate NY that weekend, with the temperature dropping quickly into the 30s that night. There is an excellent Copperpot video online of this show, including a poignant Seek Up to start and a classic version of Idea of You showing Dave with a large scarf around his neck as his frosty voice sang out. Dave joked about the cheap portable heaters the band's crew had placed onstage to help the players keep warm, saying that it reminded him of his Grandpa’s porch.

I had a membership to City Winery at this point, so we sat at a table that couldn't have been closer to Jorma than if he was playing in our living room.

2013-06-15 Hot Tuna at Clearwater Festival
Croton Point Park
Pete Seeger performed at the 2013 Clearwater festival for the last time before he passed away.
The festival was founded in the wake of environmental effects on the Hudson River and had its origins in the building of Sloop Clearwater, which Pete Seeger and friends raised donations to build in order to promote awareness of the environmental issues with the river and more generally with the earth. In its various forms the festival has taken place for over 50 years and is a great event. The proceeds go directly to support Clearwater’s environmental research, education, and advocacy to help preserve and protect the river and its tributaries, as well as general Hudson river valley.
The Festival in 2013 focused on commemorating and supporting Pete Seeger’s life and work, including his impact on young musicians who learned to play banjo and guitar through his learn-to-play series. Jorma talked about Pete’s influence during the Hot Tuna set, proclaiming simply that “Pete is the Man!”
